Stages of Reproduction from Scan to Press

In this slide all typical stages regarding color processing are shown. The scanning process provides the image data as RGB (red/green/blue) information based on the filters used in the scanner. The next step converts RGB data to their equivalent of printing dyes used; typically this is CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black or key). Already during this process knowledge is required about the final printing process. This processing step includes conversion of RGB to CMY and subsequently substitution of equal parts of C, M, and Y by black (UCR: under color removal; GCR: gray component replacement). This step is important especially for good reproduction of neutral grays and dark areas which otherwise would have heavy overprinting of C, M, and Y.
