The “In Good Company” series features speakers from various organizations having conversations or giving presentations (not sales pitches) with and specifically for educators.

Nominations for Distinguished Educator Award

The Distinguished Educator Award, established in August 2018, is given annually to a member for outstanding pedagogical contributions to computer graphics and interactive techniques at any educational level or within the context of any discipline. The award recognizes contributions in both innovative content and delivery. The award is presented annually during the award ceremony at either the North American SIGGRAPH conference or the SIGGRAPH Asia Conference (the choice of the recipient).

This in an ongoing call, but the deadline for the next award is January 31, 2022.

The Distinguished Educator Award - Call for Nominations

The Distinguished Educator Award, established in August 2018, will be given annually to a member for outstanding pedagogical contributions to computer graphics and interactive techniques at any educational level or within the context of any discipline. The award recognizes contributions in both innovative content and delivery.

The award will be presented annually during the award ceremony at either the North American SIGGRAPH conference or the SIGGRAPH Asia Conference (the choice of the recipient).

Nominations for the Distinguished Educator Award may be submitted by contacting the Educator Award Chair before 31 January each year.

Contributions being considered are broad and include:

Computer graphics and interactive techniques
Use of novel computer graphics in education
Curriculum and delivery
Student engagement
Classroom teaching techniques
Online courses
Textbooks and demos
Use of online content, such as blogs, videos or webinars

Award criteria:

Impact on research and practice of education as it relates to computer graphics and interactive techniques
Cumulative contributions to the field both directly and through leadership of others
Innovation in education
Influence on the work of others, and acceptance of educational techniques by the ACM SIGGRAPH community; educators who are making a difference as innovators or pioneers in their respective disciplines
Active in the ACM SIGGRAPH community

The awardee will be selected by a committee via nominations. Members of the SIGGRAPH community will be solicited for nominations. The deadline for nominations will be January 31. Self-nominations are allowed. Nominations may also arise from an archive of past nominations maintained by the awards chair and culled yearly by the committee.

Nominations must include:

A one-page summary explaining how the nominee meets the criteria for the award
Names and contact information of at least two people who are knowledgeable about the qualifications of the nominee and will submit letters in support of the nomination

The recipient of the award will be chosen by an award committee. The committee will have a chairperson and five committee members. The committee will meet on a regular basis as warranted starting in January to discuss potential candidates, choosing a recipient by the end of March.

AIAS Foundation scholarships

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS), a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and recognition of the interactive arts, would like to announce that submissions for its AIAS Foundation scholarships are now open.

As part of the AIAS’ efforts to promote and advance the worldwide interactive entertainment community, we offer a scholarship program to students seeking a degree for use in the video games industry. We are contacting you today in order to inform any potential students of a possible scholarship open to them.

For students pursuing a degree with the intent of employment in the video games industry, we offer the Randy Pausch and Mark Beaumont Scholarship Funds.

The Randy Pausch scholarship has been established to support students who are pursuing careers specializing in the development of interactive entertainment. Possible career paths for Randy Pausch applicants include (but are not limited to) art, animation, programming, engineering, game direction, game design, sound design, and music composition.

The Mark Beaumont scholarship has been established to support students who are pursuing careers specializing in the business of interactive entertainment. Possible career paths for Mark Beaumont applicants include (but are not limited to) executive leadership, law, marketing, public relations, and business development.

The awards are for 1 year and the amount is $2,500 each. These awards are only open to current full-time students (high school seniors are not eligible). All submissions must be postmarked by June 30, 2011. To apply, students may visit www.interactive.org/foundation/scholarships.asp.

IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications Education Department

For many years now, the ACM Siggraph Education Committee has played an important role in encouraging and facilitating efforts that connect education communities, improve the educational process, and trigger innovation and creativity.

Two members of the SIGGRAPH Education Committee, Gitta Domik and Scott Owen, have recently been recruited by IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications to start a new Education Department as a forum for graphics educators.

The new IEEE CGA Education Department provides a forum for educators to exchange best-practice examples of innovative instructional methods in computer graphics and interactive techniques. It will regularly highlight new types of courses, and courses that combine different fields—for example, art or science and technology. It will report on actual courses that have proven successful and therefore provide valuable experience and practical information for other educators.

If you feel you have a topic that is interesting and useful to other educators, check out the department guidelines and contact either Gitta Domik at domik [at] uni-paderborn.de or Scott Owen at sowen [at] gsu.edu

Also write to Gitta or Scott if you have ideas for what you would like to read about in the new IEEE CGA Education Department: we are interested in opinions of educators as well as (former or current) students of Computer Graphics.
