XR and education meeting in Tokyo

Do you teach courses for VR content development or AR app development? Are you working on school curriculum for a degree focus on XR development? We are a group of educators who are willing to develop good school curriculum and outline courses for VR/AR content development. Please come and join us.

The ED-EX preparation group is holding a meeting and discussion, co-located with VRCAI and SIGGRAPH Asia 2018 Tokyo this December. Support for this meeting is provided by the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee. We hope that educators, administrators, and researchers who teach and/or develop curricula for XR related subjects will be able to join this meeting.

We will have two discussions. The first will discuss the current status of XR (VR, AR, MR) technology, applications and content development in education. This includes courses, curricula and degree programs which focus on XR, and how educators and educational institutions are responding to recent developments in XR technologies and applications. We aim to produce a report based on this discussion.
The second discussion will focus on planning our first official workshop, ED-EX 2019, which will be co-located with SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 Brisbane. We are excited to announce this workshop proposal, which includes hands-on XR training for educators and peer-reviewed position paper discussions.

We are excited to announce the Symposium on Education program at SIGGRAPH Asia 2015. The Symposium on Education invites people from both academia and the industry to present innovative research, methods and positions about the teaching and integration of computer graphics and interactive techniques in all areas of learning. We view education as a natural part of the lifelong learning process, and we wish to support the evolving integration of art and technology embraced by educators.

Approaches and Challenges towards Animation Education

Weihua Gao (Animation School of Communication University of China and one of the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee Asia Representatives) was one of the speakers on this panel that was describes as follows:

"Animation is being taught in schools all over the world at various levels of success. . In this panel we wish to explore current approaches towards animation education and share best practices as well as the challenges facing these schools. Aspects such as policies, enrolment and class management issues to curriculum structure, pedagogy and success stories can be brought up and discussed to find out how animation institutions are effectively educating their students and preparing them for their roles in the industry. Towards the end of the panel we can also explore future developments in animation education and possible challenges that lie ahead."

SIGGRAPH Asia 2008: A Platform for CG Educators Sharing Ideas

ACM SIGGRAPH successfully kicked off its first SIGGRAPH Asia conference in Singapore during December 10th to 13th 2008.

The official report showed that more than 3200 attended and 49 countries were involved in this creatively inspired conference. About 80 percent of the attendance came from Asia-Pacific countries, including Australia and New Zealand.

On the exhibition floor, the SIGGRAPH village occupied a large area comprised of the ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee,the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee, the SIGGRAPH Asia 2009 Committee, etc. The ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee presented its education-related activities and resources to the public, and also screened the SpaceTime 2008 student competition demo reel. Our educational online resources, such as CGEMS and cgSource, attracted much attention from the educators and researchers.

The Educators program chaired by Prof. Mark Chavez was a highlight of the Asia conference. The program included 9 forums with a total of 20 presentations, covering topics such as Methodologies in Learning, Methodologies in Teaching,Game Education, The Mindspace of Learning, Professional/Academic, and more. The ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee’s Asian Representative Prof. Weihua Gao and Prof. Zhigeng Pan co-chaired the Game Education and Professional & Academic sessions. Speakers from around the world shared their creative ideas, achievements, and experiences in animation, multimedia, and game education. This facilitated a useful dialogue between the east and west.

Following the successful tradition of SIGGRAPH conferences, the Asia conference consisted of featured speakers, Courses, Papers, Educators program, Computer Animation Festival, Exhibitions, Art Gallery, Emerging Technology, and so forth. The wide diversity of programs served the needs of artists, researchers, developers, gaming experts, filmmakers, and academics in the rising Asian regions.
