The ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee is seeking submissions for the Symposium On Innovation, Research & Experiences in Education (SOIREE), to be held virtually through Zoom on January 31, 2025.

The Symposium On Innovation, Research & Experiences in Education (SOIREE) is intended to provide a dynamic, conversational and accessible venue for educators involved in teaching or using computer graphics and interaction techniques in educational settings.

There will be no charge for participation or attendance. Session recordings will be published to YouTube and may be cited in the future similar to TED Talks and other video platform content. Given the accessibility of this symposium, this is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable feedback from peers, promote your work, and learn from others that are likewise focused on the intersection of Education and computer graphics and interaction.

Session 1: In Good Company - SideFX

Presented by:

The opening session featured a discussion on procedural workflows, visual effects in education, and related resources, concluding with a Q&A on VR/AR integration, site licensing, and Houdini's programming capabilities.

Session 2: XR Methodologies

Presented by:

Birte Heinemann, RWTH Aachen University, Germany

The SOIREE 2024 session on XR Methodologies, introduced by William Barres, featured presentations by Krishnan Chandran on pedagogical practices in mixed reality classrooms, Beatriz Sousa Santos on student VR/AR projects addressing societal issues, and Birte Heinemann on the open-source tool Repix VR for teaching rendering basics, followed by a Q&A on future work and collaborative learning.

Session 3: Principles and Concepts

Presented by:

Richard Thompson, New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA
Mayet Andreassen, Texas A&M University, USA

The SOIREE 2024 session on Principles and Concepts featured presentations by Richard Thompson, who shared his approach to teaching animation by having students animate machines, while Mayet Andreassen introduced photogrammetry for incorporating scanned objects into projects. The session emphasized practical exercises to enhance creativity in digital design and concluded with a Q&A on the challenges and potential broader application of these methods.

Session 4: Live Event Virtual Production Class

Presented by:

Nick Jushchyshyn: Drexel University, USA

The SOIREE 2024 session, Live Event Virtual Production Class, focuses on a live virtual event class at Drexel University where students learned live broadcast and streaming graphics over a 10-week quarter. The 20 students collaborated on a live event streamed online, using CG sets, motion capture systems, and SDI video tools, and interacted with professionals from Epic Games and Blackmagic Design. The final project showcased student demo reels and a Q&A with industry experts, providing practical experience and valuable industry connections. The event is available on YouTube.

Session 5: Cultivating Creativity & Neurodiversity

Presented by:

Mayet Andreassen, Texas A&M University, USA
Nandhini Giri: Purdue University, USA

The SOIREE 2024 session Cultivating Creativity & Neurodiversity featured a Texas A&M University team discussing AI integration in classrooms for dialogue generation, coding assistance, and background imagery creation, and Nandini Giri from Purdue University presenting on VR pre-departure training to reduce anxiety for study abroad students. The session highlighted the benefits and challenges of AI and VR in education, concluding with a discussion on ethical considerations and students' reactions, followed by an open floor for questions.

Session 6: Collaboration & Partnerships

Melody (Pei) Li, University of New South Wales, Australia
Judy Kriger, Woodbury University, USA

The SOIREE 2024 session Collaboration & Partnerships featured Melody Li from the University of New South Wales presenting a student-teacher partnership in a work-integrated learning course that co-designed a media art exhibition and a 360-degree online gallery addressing COVID isolation. Judy Kriger, from Woodbury University, discussed managing a neurodiverse student population during the COVID lockdown and collaborating on animated PSAs to improve support and learning outcomes for neurodiverse students. Both presentations emphasize student empowerment, community engagement, and addressing neurodiversity in education.

Session 7: How to submit and get involved in SIGGRAPH 2024!

Nandhini Giri: Purdue University, USA

The SOIREE 2024 closing session How to submit and get involved in SIGGRAPH 2024! previewed the August 2024 SIGGRAPH conference in Denver. Bill Joel and Nandini Giri discuss how educators and industry can participate by submitting lessons, projects, and courses for the forum by February 21st and posters by April, with company presentations on the latest technologies fostering collaboration. With high attendance and participation from industry leaders like ILM, Disney, Pixar, and Epic, SIGGRAPH offers excellent networking and professional development opportunities for educators and students.

Why Submit to the SOIREE

Submissions to this curated symposium will be reviewed by members of the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee.
The committee is seeking submission proposals for two Topic Areas ("Show Your Stuff", and "Technology in Education") and offers two format options for submission ("Fast Forward Video" and "Short Presentation")

Topic Areas

Show Your Stuff

The Show Your Stuff topic is your opportunity to share your research, innovations and experiences with colleagues in the education community. This can also be an opportunity to highlight your studios, classrooms and other facilities through submission of a 1-min Fast Forward format video (see more information below in the Session Formats section)

Had success with an innovative approach using or teaching computer graphics and interaction?
Have an interesting project, research or otherwise, related to computer graphics and interaction you would like to show?
Did you utilize an "alternative approach" to negotiating with administration or industry to gain access to funding or facilities for your SIGGRAPH related efforts?

If so, the Show Your Stuff Topic is for you!

The committee is also interested in 1-min. Fast Forward videos that highlight your studio spaces, classroom setups and other unique facilities. Facilities related submissions are preferred in Fast Forward format rather than short presentations.

Technology in Education

The Technology in Education topic is focused specifically on SIGGRAPH technology related innovation, research or experiences in the education space. For this topic, we are of course interested in the application of development and application of new technologies, but also novel repurposing of existing technologies from other sectors, or an interesting approach to resurrecting "old" tech (that others thought had past its prime).

Do you have experiences applying new SIGGRAPH related technologies in education?
Perhaps you're using a novel approach for SIGGRAPH tech-enhanced distanced teaching and learning?
Have you found a way to bring new life to an older technology within the SIGGRAPH Education space?

If so, the TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION Topic is for you!

Session Formats

Submissions may be in one of two session formats: "Fast Forward Video" or "Short Presentation"

Fast Forward Video

Fast Forward Videos are short (1 minute) pre-recorded videos related to one of the Topic Areas noted above.

Sessions utilizing this format will bring together several video submissions that share a related theme or subject area, with submissions authors participating in a live panel. Fast Forward Sessions will begin with a virtual screening of the selected videos, followed by a hosted discussion amongst the panelists including Q&A with attendees.

Note, a link to your completed 1-min video is required with each submission.

If accepted into the symposium program, updated videos will be permitted.

Short Presentation

Short Presentations are short (5 minute), live presentations related to one of the Topic Areas noted above. Sessions utilizing this format will begin with a collection of live, short talks from 2-4 presenters followed by discussion and Q&A.
