Rigging for 3D Computer Animation

The technical art of rigging for animation entails construction of puppetry armature to enable expressive movement and character performance. Fundamental rigging concepts are transferable between methods of animation, whether 3D computer animation, 2D animation, stop-motion or cut-out animation. The rigging system creates an articulable skeletal structure, enabling poseable controls to achieve effective movement and performance requirements for animation. This list highlights a few available resources for rigging in 3D computer animation. While this list includes some introductory resources, it is primarily intended for artists and technical directors with a moderate technical background.

Physical Simulation Programming

This list is built to help those wanting to learn methods for programming simulation algorithms, leading into jobs or research areas making physical simulation tools.

Many CG effects are created with the help of physically-based simulation programs. There are several simulation methods, depending on the type of effect desired. For example, fluid simulations and cloth simulations are important ones in Computer Graphics and good places to start for understanding how simulation algorithms and approaches work. A knowledge of how to program these types of simulations provides a foundational understanding of how simulations work, allowing a student to adapt existing simulation tools or research deeper into improving simulation methods.

The essential introduction to computer graphics and the annual SIGGRAPH conference: planning your conference schedule, the graphics process, graphics hardware, modeling, rendering, animation, and how the technology is applied in the real world. The goal of the Fundamentals Seminar is to make SIGGRAPH more understandable and enjoyable, for everyone.

This SIGGRAPH course, originally presented at SIGGRAPH 2014,opens with an introduction of the conference itself. After about 10 minutes an explanation of The Graphics Process starts. It may be a somewhat technical approach to CG, but many basic concepts are explained and is pretty thorough without assuming prior knowledge.

Physics-based animation has emerged as a core area of computer graphics finding widespread application in the film and video game industries as well as in areas such as virtual surgery, virtual reality, and training simulations. This course introduces students and practitioners to fundamental concepts in physics-based animation, placing an emphasis on breadth of coverage and providing a foundation for pursuing more advanced topics and current research in the area. The course focuses on imparting practical knowledge and intuitive understanding rather than providing detailed derivations of the underlying mathematics. The course is suitable for someone with no background in physics-based animation---the only prerequisites are basic calculus, linear algebra, and introductory physics.

We begin with a simple, and complete, example of a mass-spring system, introducing the principles behind physics-based animation: mathematical modeling and numerical integration. From there, we systematically present the mathematical models commonly used in physics-based animation beginning with Newton's laws of motion and conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. We then describe the underlying physical and mathematical models for animating rigid bodies, soft bodies, and fluids. Then we describe how these continuous models are discretized in space and time, covering Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations, spatial discretizations and interpolation, and explicit and implicit time integration. In the final section, we discuss commonly used constraint formulations and solution methods.

US 3D Animation School Survey

Introduction

In this document we present the results of a survey of faculty members teaching in programs where course in 3D Computer Graphics and Animation are offered in the United States. The survey consists of 30 questions and was conducted on-line through Surveymonkey.com. Replies were solicited at SIGGRAPH 2010, via the website of the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee and the associated mailing list ‘cg-educators@siggraph.org’, and directly through e-mails. The survey was open from August 2010 through to January 2011.

Results

The survey was started with 105 respondents, tapering off to 77 who finished the entire survey. Respondents were allowed to skip questions.

Without any further analysis, this document presents the result of the survey as graphs with the response count or percentage for each available option in the multiple choice questions. When under 'other' a specific answer was given a number of times, it has been included in the graphs as separate category with those answers not being counted towards the general 'other' category. The survey did contain a few open questions, for these similar answers have been grouped together in order for them to be tallied and presented in the form of a graph.

A similar survey was conducted earlier in Japan. A comparison between the two surveys with more in depth analysis will be presented at SIGGRAPH ASIA 2011 under the title "3D Animation Education in the US and Japan: Different Environments, Similar Issues". The abstract for this sketch will be available through the ACM digital library.
