Organized by the Programa Avançado de Cultura Contemporânea (Advanced Program on Contemporary Culture).

The aim of the Seminar was to discuss possible networking and collaborative projects among major media labs and academic digital media centers in Brazil. A group of 20 outstanding digital media professors and industry professionals from different parts of Brazil was invited to present their current work and research activities. Participants included Alex Primo, Guto Nobrega, Sergio Amadeu, Silvia Laurentiz, Rita Lima, Eugenio Trivinho, Christo Nóbrega, Guido Lemos, Heloísa Buarque de Holanda, among many others.

In her role as SIGGRAPH Global Outreach Coordinator, Rejane Spitz encouraged participants to get involved and attend SIGGRAPH conferences.

Projeto “ARTE COM CIÊNCIA”

Sergipe, Northeast of Brazil, October 2011

by Rejane Spitz

Projeto “ARTE COM CIÊNCIA” is a project organized by IPTI - Instituto de Pesquisas em Tecnologia e Inovação (Institute for Research in Technology and Innovation), sponsored by FINEP, which aims at promoting art+science education in high schools located in very poor communities in the State of Sergipe (Northeast of Brazil).

I was invited to participate as a Juror, and helped select the best projects developed by high school students from the Arabela School (located in the city of Estancia, Sergipe) and from the Raimundo Neto School (located in the city of Indiaroba, Sergipe). Two projects were selected: a solar stove (a low cost solar energy device, which can be built by the user) and a project focusing on promoting consciousness on protecting animals which live in the mangrove, in special two kinds of crustaceans typical from the region: Aratu and Caranguejo-Uçá. The original projects had been developed by those students and teachers using very limited resources and technical skills, and now the Department of Art & Design at PUC-Rio University will transform those ideas into interactive installations which will become part of a collection of a museum of Art & Technology to be created in Sergipe, focusing on interactivity and science education. In 2013, 3 more projects will be selected from a series of art, science and ecology fairs which will be held in certain schools in Sergipe in October 2012, and will also be transformed into interactive installations by the team of PUC-Rio’s Department of Art & Design.

By participating in this project, I had a chance to talk with teachers from those poor communities about the importance of computer graphics and digital media education. Through this project, those students will be exposed - for the first time in their lives - to high-end technologies, in the areas of animation, game design and interactive displays. ACM SIGGRAPH’s Education Committee can play an important role by supporting projects such as this one. Also, materials such as computer animation festival DVDs, for instance, would be of great interest to these kids, and could be donated to these schools.
South America Activities Report 2006

By Rejane Spitz (ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee’s South American Representative) - rejane_spitz [at] siggraph [dot] org
Department of Art & Design, PUC-Rio University, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

One of the objectives of the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee is to help establish a world wide network of computer graphics educators. The Education Committee began its activities in South America in 1991, with the goal of encouraging and promoting exchanges among academics involved in Computer Graphics in South America.

From 1991-1992 we contacted over 300 South American universities, and compiled a pioneering South American Computer Graphics directory (printed version), which became available online in 1995.

The SIGGRAPH South America library was created in 1992 to meet the demand of South American educators in the field of Computer Graphics. Publications and audio-visual material (video tapes, slides, CD-ROMs, etc.) are available to the community for free, based on an original exchange system. Besides cutting costs for users, the exchange system lets our Library's collection grow constantly with the inclusion of productions and publications contributed by the users themselves, in some cases. The Library is hosted by the Department of Art & Design at PUC-Rio University (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and has been visited by students and professionals from a variety of fields (Art and Design, Information Technology, Engineering, Communication and others) looking for resources to use in classroom presentations, data for research and studies or current information on events and conferences in the fields of Computer Graphics and Electronic Art. Amongst the publications produced by ACM SIGGRAPH are the SIGGRAPH Conference Proceedings, course notes from courses given during the conferences and a variety of publications on activities sponsored by the association, slide sets, CDs and DVDs, and a complete video collection produced by ACM SIGGRAPH. We also offer a collection of publications (books, proceedings, programs, catalogues, scientific periodicals and magazines), videos and CDs/DVDs produced by other associations and/or independent professionals, covering different subjects related to the field of Computer Graphics.

In 1995 we created a version of the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee’s website for the South American community - in Spanish, Portuguese and English – which was hosted by PUC-Rio University.

In 2000 we established a partnership with SIGRADI, the Ibero-American Association for Computer Graphics. The ACM SIGGRAPH President, Dr. Judy Brown, participated in the SIGRADI 2000 Conference - which was held in Rio de Janeiro, attended by delegates from 15 countries in the Americas and Europe - and a strong link was established between these associations.

We have also established a important partnership with the international association LEONARDO/ISAST (International Society for the Arts, Science and Technology), whose projects, publications and activities congregate CG professionals from all over the world. In 2005, as a result of an agreement with LEONARDO/ISAST/ISEA, the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee offered 5 (five) grants to international educators appointed by those associations to attend the SIGGRAPH 2005 conference, including educators from South America.

Contact:

Rejane Spitz (ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee’s South American Representative)
- rejane_spitz [at] siggraph [dot] org
Department of Art & Design, PUC-Rio University, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Prof. Rejane Spitz was nominated the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee’s Representative in South America in 1991, and has been actively involved with both the ACM SIGGRAPH organization and with SIGGRAPH conference-related activities since then. She has presented and exhibited her work in the SIGGRAPH Educator Programs in 1995 and 2000, in the SIGGRAPH Art Gallery in 2001, has served as an International Committee member in the SIGGRAPH2004 and SIGGRAPH2006 conferences, and was the ACM SIGGRAPH International Chair in 2005.
