Post-Production Example
This is an example of a complete post-production that is taken from the
tutorial in 3-D Studio Max. This is a short movie having a science fiction theme on a
desert planet. Several components have been created and we will assemble them using the
post-production technique which in 3-D studio Max is called the Video Post.
Here are the components of the composite sequence:
- A scene of the desert landscape complete with a flying flap jet, a tower, and a sky
bitmap. The scene includes three cameras that will be used at different
times during the
sequence.
- A bitmap image of embossed metal plate used as a background for the opening and closing
titles.
- An image file list that points to a group of frames with alpha channel of an animated
opening title sequence.
- A closing title that you can composite over the plate as an ending.
Here is a shot by shot breakdown of the sequence:
- Opened on embossed iron plate for 30 frames/1 second.
- The animated title "Galactic Max" sweeps in from the top of the screen to
center. The letters are cut-outs that reveal the3-D scene behind them. After
a brief pause they zoom toward the camera filling it until the entire scene is revealed.
150 frames/5 seconds.
- Three quarter overhead of the alien desert. You can see the flap jet flying toward
a distant tower and rust colored clouds in the background. 90 frames/3 seconds.
- Cut to a point of view of the flap jet heading toward the Tower. 120 frames/4
seconds.
- Xfade to... 30 frames/1 second
- ..the Tower point of view. You can see the flap jet approaching. As it gets near
the tower... 120 frames/4 seconds
- ..wipe left to right revealing the embossed iron plate and.... 30 frames/1 second
- ...Fade in the end title "To be continued..." 30frames/1 second
- Hold for 60 frames/ 2 seconds
Here is the Video Post for the above sequence:

Here is the resultant avi movie (requires Intel Indeo 5.03 codec):
