Introduction

The human visual perception system is very complex and must be taken into account in the design and use of data visualization systems. [GREG90] notes that "Perception is not determined simply by the stimulus pattern; rather it is a dynamic searching for the best interpretation of the available data." People may interpret the same visual image quite differently, depending on both their own physiology and experience. To improve the visualization process, one must understand how the brain and visual system perceives visual information. This section looks at three ways to improve the visualization process by better understanding visual perception.
